We lived in West Berlin for six years. Many times, we would go to the Ganymede Restaurant in East Berlin for dinner. This soup would be our first course. I only found it one other time, in a little village in northern Bavaria. It tasted different and was told it was Ukrainian style -Mike
Cолянка Суп (Ukrainian)
/solyanka sup/

1 pound (450 g) smoked pork, cut into small pieces
4 cups (1 l) organic beef broth
1/2 onion, chopped
1/2 pound (225 g) pickled cucumbers
olive oil
to taste:
  • tomato catsup (German if you can find it-has a different taste)
  • parsley
  • slices of organic lemon
  • 2-3 Tbs. (30-45 ml) sweet pepper
  • sour cream
  • pimento
одне /odne/1. Fry the pork and onions in some oil.

двох /dvokh/2. Add the pepper and catsup.

трьох /tr'okh/3. Add  the cucumbers and broth. Heat

чотирьох /chotyr'okh/4. Add a slice of lemon, sour cream, pimento, and parsley for each bow.

п`ять /p'yat'/5. Pour in the liquid.
